Japa Syndrome: FG Asks Health Workers to Resign Before Moving Abroad

The Nigerian government has directed all health workers to resign from their positions before searching for better opportunities overseas.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health, announced during his visit to the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro in Abeokuta, Ogun State, that the directive was part of the Executive Order issued by President Bola Tinubu.

He mentioned that health professionals who wish to work abroad must first resign before leaving the country, as part of efforts to address the issue of brain drain, commonly referred to as the ‘Japa Syndrome’, in the health industry.

Also, Alausa revealed that the government had started actively hiring personnel in the healthcare field.

The minister stated that the number of nurses enrolling annually has increased significantly, from around 28,000 to 68,000, and is expected to reach 120,000 by the end of the year.

“President Tinubu acknowledged the people as the nation’s most important resource and pledged to enhance the healthcare system for their welfare. In addition to the significant increase in nurse enrolment, there has also been a doubling in the enrolment of doctors, dentists, and pharmacists.

“The government allows individuals to move to the UK or Australia for appointments, but they must resign from their federal government positions instead of requesting a leave of absence.

“This directive is outlined in the Presidential Executive Order sent to all Chief Medical Directors of federal health facilities for implementation.”
