NLC President Calls for Proper Market Research before agreeing on New National Minimum Wage

The President of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has called for proper market research before agreeing to the new national minimum wage.

This is because workers in Taraba and Gombe states have offered N60,000 as the new national minimum wage.

However, workers in Bauchi and Adamawa states have proposed a 50 percent increase from the current N30,000 salary.

Workers in Borno and Yobe states, on the other hand, decided to accept the resolution of the Presidential Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage.

Ajaero,  the chairman of the North East public hearing on the new national minimum wage, on Thursday described the current minimum wage in Yola as a “starvation wage”.

He stated that it would be a waste of time to agree on a new salary unless first and after consulting the market.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who spoke through the Deputy Governor, Kaletapwa Farauta, stated that no amount of money is enough for a Nigerian worker considering the current  situation of the country.

The governor of Bauchi state, Bala Mohammed, also called for a review of the current distribution formula at a public hearing because, according to him, most Nigerians live in the states.

Governor Mohammed noted with concern that the country’s difficulties  are palpable.

“Nigerians are suffering, Nigerians are watching us Mr. President,” he said.  Proposals were also presented by various labor movements, trade unions and religious groups.
