The Gbagir community in Ukum Local Government Area, (LGA), of Benue State, is in turmoil as suspected armed Fulani militia, supported by local Tiv bandits, have laid siege to the area.
The invasion, which has resulted in over 45 deaths, has prompted the community to call for the mounting of more security posts in and around the area.
A traditional ruler in the area, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained the genesis of the conflict, stating, “The combined forces of Fulani and Tiv militia gangs started moving into the bushes of Gbagir in their hundreds on Sunday to sack the gang that killed Alhaji Gana. And on Tuesday morning the bloody fight ensued.”
The traditional ruler further emphasised the urgency of the situation, stating, “There is an urgent need to protect the other three villages because we are hearing that the first phase of the attack is in Gbagir while Chito, Gbeji, and Afia might be next.”
The community’s distress has been compounded by the tragic loss of innocent lives caught in the crossfire. The traditional ruler lamented, “Over 45 persons who were mainly bandits have been killed, though we have records of over 12 farmers who were caught in the crossfire. Over 30 others were injured while some are also missing.
“The timely intervention of Governor Hyacinth Alia and the military has been credited with preventing further bloodshed. The Governor’s swift response to intelligence and the intervention of Operation Whirl Stroke have been crucial in safeguarding the people of Ukum LGA.”
The lawmaker representing the Ukum state constituency, Ezra Nyiyongo, confirmed the grim situation, revealing that 20 corpses had been recovered.
He emphasised the urgent need for increased security presence in the border communities of Benue and Taraba.
The community’s plea for more security posts was echoed by the Benue State Police Commissioner, Mr Emmanuel Adesina, who confirmed the deployment of additional officers to the area.
He also disclosed that five corpses had been recovered from the scene.
In response to the escalating violence, a military source confirmed the presence of troops in Ukum, emphasizing their mission to prevent the attack from affecting innocent people.
As the armed militia continues to pose a threat to the community, the urgent need for a fortified military presence in all the Benue and Taraba border communities has become increasingly apparent. The community’s cry for more security posts reflects the gravity of the situation and the pressing need for immediate action to protect innocent lives.
