In a press statement to commemorate the coming International Women’s Day (IWD), the Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr. Gambo Aliyu has raised alarm over the alarming gender gap in HIV prevalence in Nigeria.
In the statement released on Tuesday, Dr. Aliyu, stated that more women are more affected compared to men, with young Nigerian women being three times more likely to be affected than men of the same age group in the country.
He noted that an estimated 1.8 million persons are living with HIV in Nigeria, with approximately 1.63 million already receiving Antiretroviral Therapy. Also, six out of 10 persons living with HIV in the country are females.
“This year’s theme, ‘Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress’ resonates deeply with NACA’s commitment to advancing gender equality and addressing unique challenges faced by women living with HIV/AIDS.”
Dr. Aliyu emphasised the urgent need for investment in women’s health, stressing that empowering women is not only a financial commitment but also an investment in the sustainable progress of societies.
“When we empower women, we create a transformative effect that positively impacts families, communities, and the nation as a whole.”
NACA reaffirmed its dedication to empowering women and girls, recognizing their crucial roles in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Dr. Aliyu highlighted the agency’s efforts in promoting inclusive policies, ensuring access to comprehensive healthcare, and fostering education to empower women to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
He expressed gratitude to individuals, organizations, and partners contributing to the advancement of women’s rights and the global HIV/AIDS response, urging collective action towards a future where every woman can live free from the burden of HIV/AIDS.
