The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Adamu Aliyu SAN, has identified corruption as the primary driver behind the current economic challenges plaguing Nigeria.
Aliyu, represented by the Secretary to the Commission, Mr. Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu, made this remark during a courtesy visit by members of the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) to the Commission’s Headquarters on Thursday.
In a statement signed by ICPC Spokesperson, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, Aliyu stressed the impact of corruption on the nation’s economic development, he said
“Nigeria is grappling with the harsh realities of corruption, which have had a profound impact on the growth of the economy.”
He then urged Nigerians to exercise patience while actively contributing to the ongoing reform efforts in the nation.
Highlighting the Commission’s role in public enlightenment, Aliyu stressed the importance of adherence to policies aimed at addressing challenges in the execution of constituency and executive projects. He underscored the significance of public enlightenment in combating corruption, emphasizing it as one of the core mandates of the Commission.
Aliyu also advised the CJID to leverage the Freedom of Information Act to obtain information from government agencies. He suggested that if agencies refused to disclose requested information, CJID could pursue legal action against them.
In response, the leader of the CJID team and CEO, Mr. Dapo Olorunyomi, affirmed the visit’s objective of strengthening the existing relationship between the organization and the ICPC. He highlighted the need for increased citizen engagement, stating that Anti-Corruption Agencies (ACAs) alone cannot win the fight against corruption.
Olorunyomi expressed the Centre’s readiness to support the ICPC in tracking constituency and executive projects. He also mentioned the challenges faced in accessing data from some Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and hoped for ICPC’s assistance in this regard.
Furthermore, Olorunyomi pledged CJID’s commitment to provide media engagement support and share global database resources to enhance the Commission’s investigation activities.
