Contrary to expectations cement is still selling for high price of N9500 per bag, Africa Health Report investigations can reveal.
The Federal government through the Minister of Works David Umahi on Monday, held a meeting with Representatives from Dangote Cement Plc, BUA Cement Plc, Lafarge Africa Plc, members of Cement Producers, and other stakeholders to force the skyrocketing cost of cement down.
The meeting which was also attended by the Minister of Industry, Dr.Doris Uzoka-Anite, decided to slash prices of cement all over Nigeria to N7,000 and N8,000 depending on the location nationwide.
A communique on the government intervention to peg the price of cement at between N7,000 and N8,000 was made public following the Abuja meeting on Monday. The spokesman of the works’ minister, Orji Uchenna Orji, had said that the government would within 30 days monitor the progress of the price change.
However, when African Health Report (AHR), reporter visited some retail shops it was found that the product still sells for as high as N9,500.
Mr. Marshal who is working at a construction site in the FCT told AHR in a phone conversation that as of yesterday, his distributors refused to sell cement but they sold to him this morning at N9,500, claiming it will take weeks before the prices of cement price will be sold at N7,000.
