In a shocking turn of events, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Adamawa State and a former member of the House of Representatives, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, tragically passed away during the penalty shootouts of the AFCON2023 semi-finals match between Nigeria and South Africa.
The corps member, identified as Samuel from Kaduna State, reportedly collapsed just before the final kick that secured Nigeria’s victory in the match.
According to eyewitness accounts, on social media on Thursday, the corps member fainted before the winning goal and unfortunately passed away before reaching the hospital in Numan.
The post read, “We lost one Nigerian during our victory celebration over South Africa at our sports viewing centre here in Numan.
“He died before they could reach the hospital in Numan. May his soul rest in peace.”
NYSC Coordinator in Adamawa State, Jingi Dennis, confirmed the tragic news, expressing hope for more details about the incident.
Samuel’s colleagues revealed that he had expressed his dislike for watching penalty shootouts before suddenly collapsing and being pronounced dead at the General Hospital in Numan.
In a parallel tragedy, a former member of the House of Representatives, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, also succumbed to a heart attack while watching the match.
A source close to the politician revealed that Dr Ojougboh shouted and then collapsed when South Africa scored a penalty, suffering a massive heart attack that led to his untimely death.
The sudden and tragic deaths of both the corps member and the former politician have sent shockwaves through the nation, highlighting the emotional intensity and impact of sports events on individuals.
The incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of health awareness and the need for proper medical attention during moments of high emotional stress.
