The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in a press briefing on Monday from Southwest Zone D has given President Bola Tinubu a 14-day ultimatum to implement concrete measures addressing the escalating cost of living crisis in the country.

The media briefing, conducted by Coordinator Alao John and Secretary General Southwest Sanni Sulaimon Olamide, of the association’s Southwest Zone D, signals the association’s determination to hold the government accountable and advocate for the welfare of the Nigerian people.

Expressing deep concern over the hardships citizens face, the students’ body highlighted the economic challenges, including inflation, unemployment, and a weakening currency, that have significantly contributed to the rising cost of living across the nation.

“The impact of these economic pressures has been particularly severe on the average Nigerian, making it increasingly difficult to afford necessities such as food, shelter, and healthcare,” lamented NANS.

The association emphasized that the unbearable economic hardship resulting from the soaring cost of living can be addressed if political leaders prioritize the interests of the masses. They issued a direct appeal to President Tinubu, urging him to intervene and take decisive action.

NANS also issued a 14-day ultimatum for President Tinubu to respond to their demands and implement concrete measures. Failure to do so, it said, would lead to mass protests, with plans to mobilise students and citizens to take to the streets.

While appealing to relevant stakeholders, including government officials, policymakers, and civil society organisations, NANS stressed the urgent need for swift and decisive action to mitigate the impact of the cost-of-living crisis.
