President Bola Tinubu has ordered an emergency meeting to address the food security problems in the country.

The President who returned to Nigeria after a two-week private visit to Paris, France, marking his 14th foreign visit since taking office eight months ago, directed immediate intervention amidst protests in several states over rising food and living costs.

The meeting, chaired by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, was part of a series of discussions aimed at alleviating the suffering and preventing further security breakdown.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, stated that the President had directed immediate interventions to address the issue of food shortage and high prices.

He emphasised that the government would not stand by while Nigerians suffered due to the unavailability and high cost of essential food items.

Idris also noted that Nigeria was not in shortage of food, and the government was in talks with millers and major commodity traders to increase supply and reduce prices.

He highlighted that some individuals were taking advantage of the situation, particularly the depreciation of the naira, to exploit the high food prices.

The emergency meeting also addressed the national security implications of the food crisis, with the National Security Adviser participating in the discussions.

“The government’s efforts to address the food security issue include providing interventions to make food more accessible to Nigerians and working with major stakeholders to ensure adequate supply and affordable prices,” the minister explained.
