In a move to improve healthcare delivery in hospitals across the country, the Federal Government has granted waivers to medical directors for the employment of health workers.
This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Health, Dr Tunji Alausa, during an official visit to the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.
According to Alausa, a waiver committee will be set up by the Federal Ministry of Health to oversee the process of granting employment waivers to hospitals.
“This committee will ensure that hospitals can recruit the necessary number of workers based on their needs and budget,” he said. “Transparency and accountability will be maintained through regular checks and balances.”
The waiver committee will promptly review and address waiver requests, minimizing any delays in the process.
The initiative is expected to start in 2024, giving medical directors ample time to plan for and utilize these waivers effectively.
During his visit to UCH, Alausa acknowledged the challenges faced by the hospital, particularly the issue of inadequate power supply.
He urged the hospital to consider alternative sources of power such as solar energy to mitigate this problem.
He said: “We commend UCH for efforts so far, but there is a need to train more personnel to meet our future needs. The Federal Government wants our healthcare to move forward.
“We can’t fix all the problems at once, but the good thing is that we have a direction. We have a passionate president who is ready to support our health sector, and hospitals so that they can give excellent care to the citizens,” he said.
