The Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) has extended a lifeline to children suffering from sickle cell disorder by offering free health insurance.

Managing Director, ASHIA, Simeon Onyemaechi announced the registration of over 20 afflicted children at the agency’s Awka office on Tuesday.

Expressing ASHIA’s commitment to alleviating the associated financial burdens, Onyemaechi highlighted the strain faced by parents and adult patients managing the disorder.

Aisha Edward-Maduagwu, Director of the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home in Agulu, underlined the genetic nature of the disorder and the constant care it requires.

She called for continued support from the government, acknowledging ASHIA and the state governor for their support.

“The insurance will cover routine drugs, frequent medical checkups, blood tests, emergency hospitalizations, and other health-related expenditures associated with managing the disorder.”.
