The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated the national multisectoral Emergency Operations Centre for Lassa Fever (LF-EOC) due to a “High Risk” of increased spread and impact of the disease.
In response, the Director General, NCDC, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, emphasised the need for a nationwide response involving the government, people, partners, and stakeholders.
He said: “While the NCDC has the mandate to lead the prevention, preparedness, and response to public health emergencies, this is done in collaboration and with the support of States who also have to develop and implement evidence-driven outbreak response plans for their territories.
“He also highlighted the collective responsibility of the public in maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, as well as food hygiene to combat Lassa fever.
The NCDC urged the public and healthcare workers to remain vigilant and seek early detection and immediate presentation at health facilities, as it significantly increases survival chances. Stating, “The organization remains committed to reducing the fatality rate of Lassa fever to a single digit and safeguarding the health of Nigerians.”
