The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has revealed that the nation recorded a staggering 9,155 suspected cases of Lassa fever in 2023, with 1270 confirmed cases and 227 deaths.
Dr. Adetifa Ifedayo, the director-general of NCDC, disclosed this alarming information in a statement released on Thursday.
According to Dr Adetifa, the cases were reported across 28 states and 124 local government areas (LGAs) in Nigeria.
The fatality rate for Lassa fever in 2023 was reported at 17.9 per cent.
He emphasized that the zones of impact of Lassa fever have been expanding across the country. Stating
“The zones of impact of Lassa fever have been increasing across the country with risk of international exposures.”
