Tanzania’s health authorities have issued a high alert following an outbreak of red eye disease, a condition characterized by eye redness often attributed to swollen or dilated blood vessels.

The Director of Curative Services in the Ministry of Health, Pascal Ruggajo, announced at a press conference in Dar es Salaam that preliminary investigations indicate a widespread prevalence of the disease within the country.

Ruggajo highlighted a notable increase in reported cases of red eye disease across health centres, noting that between December 22, 2023, and January 11, 2024, 869 patients in Dar es Salaam alone have been diagnosed with the condition.

Symptoms of red eye disease, as noted by Ruggajo, include itching of the eyes, a burning sensation, and increased tearing.

In response to the outbreak, health officials are guiding various remedies for affected individuals. These measures include gentle washing of eyelids and light massaging. Additionally, eye care specialists may recommend and prescribe medicines tailored to alleviate the symptoms.

The Ministry of Health has urged the public to remain vigilant and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms associated with red eye disease. Stating, “Health officials are working to contain the spread of the disease and provide necessary support to affected individuals.”.
