The United Nations (UN) has appealed for $4.2 billion to provide much-needed humanitarian aid to 8.5 million people within Ukraine and 2.3 million refugees in Eastern Europe in 2024.
The ongoing war in Ukraine, led by Russia, has prompted the UN to prioritize assisting those most in need.
The organization stressed the urgent need for life-saving humanitarian aid due to a recent wave of attacks, coupled with the harsh winter conditions.
According to their estimates, this year, 14.6 million people, accounting for 40 per cent of the population, will need humanitarian assistance in Ukraine.
Presenting the plan on Monday at a joint conference in Geneva, UN aid chief Martin Griffiths stressed the dire circumstances faced by hundreds of thousands of children living in frontline communities, enduring terror, trauma, and deprivation of necessities.
Griffiths called for increased humanitarian support for Ukraine, where crucial infrastructure like homes, schools, and hospitals are continually targeted.
“Approximately 6.3 million people have fled Ukraine and remain refugees, primarily across Europe. The regional refugee response plan is seeking $1.1 billion to reach 2.3 million refugees and host communities.”.
