The Katsina government has issued a warning to private and community secondary schools in the state against overcharging final-year students for West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) fees.
In a letter signed by Abubakar Umar Matazu, the director of private and community schools in the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the government expressed dismay over the overcharging trends observed in schools across the state.
The government emphasised that it would not tolerate parents and students being extorted by schools, and urged schools to add only a paltry 40 per cent of the actual examination fees to cover their administrative charges.
“For this year 2024, the WAEC and NECO fees are set at N27,000 and N25,250 respectively per candidate and therefore, the private and Community Schools should not exceed the sum of N37,800 and N35,350 for both exams in the state.”
The letter also stressed that the schools should allow students to register for the examination of their choice, adding that any schools found going against this directive would face stringent punitive measures.
