In a bizarre move, the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS) in the Benin Republic, Ugochukwu Favour has called for the arrest of Umar Audu, the undercover reporter who exposed the corruption in the issuance of university certificates in the country.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily today, he said the actions of the reporter were implicating the government and undermining the credibility of agencies like the Immigration and National Youth Services Corps (NYSC).
“He has to be arrested. This guy needs to be arrested because, I know, he’s a reporter who is trying to clear out some things but, on that note, you are trying to implicate some persons now because, in a sense, you’re trying to implicate the government, the NYSC, and the immigration,” Favour emphasised.
When asked if Audu’s efforts had exposed loopholes that needed addressing, Favour acknowledged the potential for systemic issues to be uncovered. However, he urged the government to promptly investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
The call for the arrest of Umar Audu by the NANS president raises important questions about the balance between investigative journalism and national security. As this controversy unfolds, the Nigerian government will likely face growing pressure to respond and address the alleged corruption in certificate issuance.
