The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has restated its determination to crack down on unqualified teachers following the revelation that 27.1 per cent of teachers who sat for the November 2023 Professional Qualifying Examination failed.
Speaking during an interactive session with journalists, the Registrar of TRCN, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, disclosed that out of the 15,753 candidates who took the examination in 38 centres across the country, 10,636 passed, representing 72.9 per cent, while 3,963 candidates failed, accounting for 27.1 per cent.
The Registrar emphasised the council’s commitment to improving the teaching profession in Nigeria and ensuring that only qualified individuals are allowed to teach.
He highlighted the importance of maintaining high professional standards in the education sector, while disclosing that “over 2.3 billion teachers have been registered and approximately 400,000 licensed in Nigeria so far.”
Speaking further, Ajiboye assured that “by 2024, the council will focus on eliminating quackery, those that do not have business with teaching, especially from private institutions.”
