OPEC Stresses Complexity of Energy Transition Amid Calls for Fossil Fuel Phase-Out at COP28

The head of the OPEC oil cartel, Haitham Al Ghais, on Saturday emphasised that there is no “single solution” to the energy transition, as pressure mounts to reach an agreement on phasing out fossil fuels at the COP28 climate talks.
Speaking at the UN meeting in Dubai, Al Ghais stated that realistic approaches are needed to address emissions while promoting economic growth, poverty eradication, and increased resilience.
He said: “We need realistic approaches to tackle emission, ones that enable economic growth, help eradicate poverty and increase resilience at the same time.”
OPEC faced criticism after it was revealed that the Kuwaiti secretary-general urged members and allies to reject any language that specifically targets fossil fuels instead of emissions.
Negotiators continue their intensive discussions to find a compromise on the future of oil, gas, and coal to meet the global target of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
