NAFDAC Issues Alert on Dangers of Carbide, Azo Dye in Food Processing

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched an awareness campaign in Yobe State to caution the public against the harmful use of calcium carbide for fruit ripening and Azo dye for thickening and colouring palm oil.

The state’s NAFDAC coordinator, Lawan Dadingelma, made this known on Friday in a statement .

He emphasised the potential health risks associated with these practices, noting that calcium carbide is a dangerous chemical capable of damaging internal organs when ingested, while Azo dye is a carcinogenic compound that could cause cancer.

He added that the agency is concerned about the health implications of these practices  which is why it is sensitising the public.

Dadingelma also called on packaged water manufacturers and bakers to adhere to good manufacturing practices by ensuring the safety and wholesomeness of their products for human consumption.

“The agency will not hesitate to shut down businesses that are found to be using harmful chemicals in their products,” he warned.

As part of their campaign, NAFDAC officials also acknowledged and rewarded traditional rulers actively advocating against harmful food practices.

Notably, the Emirs of Bade, Potiskum, and Fika were presented with awards of recognition during visits by NAFDAC representatives.
