To combat the growing concern of loneliness as a global challenge, the World Health Organisation WHO) on Wednesday unveiled a new Commission on Social Connection.

This initiative aims to prioritise social connection as a means of promoting mental and physical well-being, while also accelerating the implementation of effective solutions in countries worldwide.

Co-chaired by renowned U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy and African Union Youth Envoy, Chido Mpemba, the Commission boasts a distinguished membership of 11 influential policy-makers, thought leaders, and advocates.

Over three years, these experts will meticulously analyse and emphasise the pivotal role of social connection in enhancing health outcomes for individuals across all age groups.

According to the WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, “High rates of social isolation and loneliness around the world have serious consequences for health and well-being.

He said: “People without enough strong social connections are at higher risk of stroke, anxiety, dementia, depression, suicide and more.

“This WHO Commission will help establish social connection as a global health priority and share the most promising interventions,” he added.
