In recognition of World Diabetes Day, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has underscored the importance of ensuring equitable access to essential care for individuals with diabetes.
It emphasised effective measures for reducing the risk of complications associated with diabetes.
It made this statement on Tuesday to commemorate the World Diabetes Day, a day set aside to raise awareness on diabetes as a global health concern.
“This World Diabetes Day, WHO will highlight the need for equitable access to essential care, including raising awareness of ways people with diabetes can mminimise their risk of complications. Activities will also celebrate the experiences of people with all forms of diabetes to help those impacted to take action, including seeking and obtaining essential care,” WHO said.
The global health authority highlighted that increased awareness of measures people living with diabetes can take to minimise complications is an integral part of essential care. It encouraged the celebration of the diverse experiences of individuals with all forms of diabetes.
While acknowledging that certain types of diabetes, such as Type 1 Diabetes, cannot be prevented, WHO pointed out that other forms, like Type 2 Diabetes, can be prevented through adopting a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, abstaining from smoking, and maintaining a normal body weight.
It also stressed that with regular screening and early detection, all forms of diabetes can be treated to mitigate complications.
