A public health physician, Dr Dickson Aiyudu, has said proactive measures can significantly reduce the risk of contracting diabetes, adding that adopting a healthy routine consisting of exercise, maintaining a balanced diet rich in whole foods, and avoiding excessive sugar and processed foods are crucial components of diabetes prevention.
Speaking on the 2023 World Diabetes Day on Tuesday, he emphasised the need for increased awareness and action on diabetes which he noted affects millions of people worldwide.
Aiyudu said, “According to the International Diabetes Federation, over 460 million people have diabetes, and this number is projected to rise. The implications are far-reaching, impacting not only individuals but also straining healthcare systems and economies.
“Several risk factors contribute to diabetes, including genetics, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and poor dietary choices. However, proactive measures can significantly reduce the risk. Regular exercise, maintaining a balanced diet rich in whole foods, and avoiding excessive sugar and processed foods are crucial components of diabetes prevention.
“World Diabetes Day serves as a platform to increase awareness about the condition, dispel myths, and promote understanding. Knowledge empowers individuals to make informed choices regarding their health and encourages communities to support those affected by diabetes.
“For those living with diabetes, managing the condition is a daily commitment. Monitoring blood sugar levels, adhering to prescribed medications, and adopting a healthy lifestyle are key elements of effective diabetes management. Emotional and social support also play vital roles in helping individuals navigate the challenges of living with a chronic condition.”
The public health expert noted that advancements in diabetes care are continually evolving from insulin pumps to continuous glucose monitoring systems, and other new technological tools that enhance diabetes management.
Calling for unity in managing the disease, he said there must be commitment to raising awareness, fostering understanding, and supporting diabetes patients.
“Addressing the diabetes epidemic requires collaborative efforts on a global scale. Governments, healthcare providers, communities, and individuals all have roles to play in creating environments that promote health, provide access to education, and ensure equitable healthcare for everyone.
“On World Diabetes Day, let us unite in our commitment to raising awareness, fostering understanding, and supporting those affected by diabetes. By sharing knowledge, advocating for healthier lifestyles, and embracing innovation, we can collectively strive to create a world where the impact of diabetes is diminished, and everyone has the opportunity to lead a healthier, fulfilling life,” he stated.
