Arby’s awarded a check of $24,050 collected from a fundraiser in July to Hillcrest Bruce Mission on Friday.

More kids will have a Christmas this year and it is all thanks to the seven Arby’s locations in the region that collected money in one month, Mike Maynard, executive director of Hillcrest Bruce Mission, said.

“It’s almost a speechless kind of thing,” Maynard said. “I had no idea that it was going to be that much. They wanted to make sure that everybody who signed up for one of our Christmas programs was able to get Christmas gifts.”

Arby’s employees from Grayson, Cannonsburg, Ashland, South Point, Russell, and Louisa made a trip to Hillcrest Bruce Mission for a tour of the place to see what it offered and present a check.

The Prestonsburg location was absent but did help in raising funds that went into the check.

Maynard said he could not appreciate Arby’s enough for awarding the non-profit organization money to help families in need.

“A lot of businesses don’t operate this way. For Arby’s to make this conscious decision that they are going to raise money to give back to the community, this is the kind of support from all businesses that we need,” he said.

“A portion of profits should get reinvested back into the community in many different ways,” he added. “I applaud Arby’s and their foundation and John Wade for creating this to make it happen.”

Hillcrest Bruce Mission, at 1819 Eloise St. in Ashland, was founded as a place for people to love their neighbor. Over the years the place has since transformed into something Maynard could not imagine at one point in time.

“When I worked here back in 1985 and 1986, we didn’t have a food pantry, we didn’t have a clothing closet here initially,” he said. “It has changed over the years and morphed into whatever the community needs at the time.”

The goal of the place now is simply to help people, he said.

“Whether it’s needing assistance with basic and health needs — education, employment, your social, spiritual needs, whatever you may need help with — nothing is too great for us to try and help you and work with you.”

Maynard said a part of the check will help cover operational expenses and buy food and hygiene products for the pantry in house.

“The money that is left over from Christmas will go to helping people with other necessities that they may need help with,” Maynard said.
