The International Day of the Young Girl was celebrated at the FAWE School Group (GS) in Kigali where more than 400 young girls from secondary and primary schools in Kigali gathered, and the theme was “Today is our right . Let’s prepare a good future for us” and the guest of honor was the Minister of Family Promotion Valentine Uwamariya.

“It is important that our young girls know and defend their rights. They are exported so as not to devote themselves solely to housework. They must be made aware to fight against sexual violence and premature pregnancy of which they are victims,” she indicated.

In Eastern Province, Young Girl’s Day was celebrated at Tabagwe GS, Tabagwe sector, Nyagatare district. The same celebration will continue in the seven schools in the Nyagatare and Karama sectors. The theme of the day in Nyagatare was the fight against early pregnancies, especially since during these two months of July and August 2023, 212 cases of early pregnancies among minors were recorded.

“The problem that arises is that in Nyagatare district, parents have not yet taken on the duty to prosecute perpetrators of underage pregnancies. These parents consider that it is a way of stirring up conflicts in families, while such offenses carry seriousness to the human person. Parents will need to listen and spend time with their children. Otherwise, it is the perpetrators of the pregnancies who take advantage of this void to divert young girls into trap paths Juliette Murekatete.

She urges young girls not to fall into dangerous temptations and to defend their rights, while denouncing the accomplices and perpetrators of sexual violence and early pregnancies. (END)
