NIMET Issues Alert on Hazy Weather in Northern Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning regarding the potential deterioration of visibility in certain northern states due to the influx of dust from haze originating in neighbouring regions.

According to the agency, in a statement, said stations in Chad and Niger that share a border with Nigeria have reported reduced visibility due to dust haze, with visibility ranging from 800 meters to 4,000 metres.

NiMet, in its statement, anticipated that strong winds will carry the suspended dust particles into some northern states in Nigeria, further reducing horizontal visibility. This development is expected to result in moderate to poor horizontal visibility in the northern parts of the country, including Katsina, Kano, Nguru, Jigawa, Potiskum, and Maiduguri, over the next 24 hours.

As a precautionary measure, the agency aadvised the public to take necessary steps to protect themselves from the dust particles currently suspended in the atmosphere.

“Individuals with respiratory conditions are particularly encouraged to take precautions, as the present weather conditions may be detrimental to their health,” it cautioned.

Additionally, airline operators were urged to stay informed by regularly checking NiMet’s weather reports to facilitate effective planning for their operations.
