With the looming nationwide strike announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has implored labour leaders to consider the ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to alleviate the current hardships faced by Nigerians.
The Speaker was reacting to a strike action declaration by the president of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Joseph Ajaero and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Festus Osifo, at press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
The duo said “in view of the spirit of independence, Nigerians are to take their destinies in our hands and rescue themselves thereby embarking on indefinite shut down on 3rd of October 2023.”
Speaker Abass made, in a welcome address on Tuesday to welcome members of the House back from their two month annual recess, called for more patience from the labour unions, and cautioned that a strike at this juncture could exacerbate an already challenging situation.
He requested that they should engage in discussions with the executive, while acknowledging the “enormous challenges” facing Nigeria, particularly in terms of national security and the economy, including the cost of living crisis, escalating food prices, inadequate wages, fluctuating foreign exchange rates and a shrinking middle class.
Abass promised that the upcoming presentation of the 2023 Supplementary Appropriation Bill and the 2024 Appropriation Bill by the Executive will meet the needs of the people.
The Speaker pledged the House’s commitment to securing a “survival wage” for all Nigerian workers, in addition to serving as intermediaries between organised labour and the government to address these concerns.
“In the course of our recess, our country has continued to face numerous challenges and presented with even greater opportunities and prospects. It is now our collective responsibility to address these issues with wisdom, integrity and a commitment to the betterment of our society,” he stated.
While expressing deep concerns over the hardships brought about by economic instability in the country, he reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the legislature to address the socio-economic challenges confronting Nigerians as the welfare of the citizens remains a top priority for the 10th House.
“The people have placed their trust in us, and it is our duty to honour that trust by working diligently towards their welfare. Thus, as we resume our legislative duties today, it is crucial that we prioritise the needs of our constituents. We must remain steadfast in our commitment to promoting good governance, ensuring social justice, and fostering economic growth,” he stated.
