The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has introduced a self-service solution that will enable Nigerians register for their National Identification Number (NIN) conveniently via their smartphones.

This platform was launched during the 5th Identity Day commemoration event held by the Commission and the Ministry of Interior in Abuja on Saturday.

Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Acting Director General/CEO of the Commission, emphasised the critical importance of identity in the country, stating that it represents more than just a card or a number, but serves as a gateway to essential services, social benefits, and personal and economic growth.
She also highlighted the need to prioritise privacy and data protection while striving for inclusivity in providing identity solutions for all.
Coker-Odusote pointed out that a robust identity management system can assist in addressing insecurity and supporting Nigerians in various ways. Regarding the self-service solution, she explained that it aims to reduce registration turnaround time, making it more accessible for individuals to register from their homes. Those without digital tools can still visit NIMC offices or nearby front-end partners for assistance.
On his part, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed the Federal Government’s intention to harmonise all identity data related to Nigerians. This includes data from sources such as the Bank Verification Number (BVN), telcos, voters’ identification, and NIMC. NIMC is legally mandated to manage and maintain a national identity database.
The self-service enrolment system by NIMC will be powered by Banksforte Technology Limited, a subsidiary of the Banksforte Group, specializing in project management, construction engineering, ICT, and other fields.
The self-service application was not yet available for download on PlayStore or App Store.
