The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a syndicate that specialises in bringing in banned goods into the country by forging customs documents.

According to the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the group were apprehended at Tradefair market in Lagos, with three trailer loads of imported Crusader medicated soap and four thousand Mekako soap, totaling worth N1 billion.

Adeyeye, who made this known at a press briefing on Friday, added that the arrested suspects will be charged to court soon.

She warned the public to steer clear of cosmetics products because they contain  mercury which is harmful to the kidney, skin and overall health.

The DG further disclosed that one of the soaps was falsely labelled “made in England” while its actual origin is India.

Both products were recognised as bleaching or whitening agents, in contravention of the Agency’s regulations, including the Cosmetic Products (Prohibition of Bleaching Agents) Regulations, 2019.
