The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abass, has called for collective efforts by the government and boat operators to promote the safety of Nigerian lives and properties on waterways.
This is sequel to multiple boat mishaps across Adamawa and Niger States in the past three days.
On Friday, a boat accident on the Njuwa Lake in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State left eight people dead and seven others missing.
Similarly, on Sunday, another boat mishap claimed the lives of 24 people in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State
On Monday afternoon, another unfortunate boat capsize was recorded in Gurin Village, Fufore Local Government in Adamawa State that left 11 people dead.
Reacting to these incidents in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, the Lawmaker commiserated with the families of the deceased, as well as the people and government of Adamawa and Niger States over the losses.
He noted that water transportation as an alternative to road and rail transport should not be recording such mishaps.
The Speaker, therefore, called for a review of operational standards by relevant authorities, urging strict adherence to safety measures by boat operators and passengers.
