The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on all 36 state governors in Nigeria to reveal details regarding the spending of the N2 billion palliative fund recently disbursed to them by the Federal Government.
The transparency advocacy group also requested the governors to disclose the names of beneficiaries and provide comprehensive information regarding how the relief funds have been utilised so far.
This recent call to action follows reports that many Nigerians are still experiencing financial difficulties despite the substantial amount of money that has been allocated to ease their plight occasioned by fuel subsidy removal.
SERAP said it believes that the state governors owe the public a duty to provide adequate information on the funds to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution of the much-needed resources.
In a statement issued by the group signed by deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP stated: “It is in the public interest to publish the details on the spending of the N2 billion palliative and any subsequent disbursement of funds to your government.
“Transparency and accountability in the spending of the N2 billion and any subsequent disbursement to your state would help to reduce the risk of corruption, mismanagement, diversion, or opportunism.”
