The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has assured that the Police Force is firmly resolved to combat the illicit manufacture, sale, possession and use of firearms in Nigeria without the requisite licenses and permits.
He noted that this not only contravenes the law but also jeopardises society’s safety.
A press statement by the Police Force posted on Monday on X (Twitter), also disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police directed all State Commissioners of Police, supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police overseeing Zonal Commands and tactical squads to initiate a nationwide crackdown on the illegal manufacture, sale, possession and use of prohibited firearms.
This is just as he urged all Nigerians to promptly report any suspicious firearm-related activities to their local police divisions or through various official NPF social media platforms for a swift response.
The statement also said that the IGP formed a specialised committee to do a comprehensive review of firearms licensing and regulations within the Nigeria Police Force.
This initiative which is aimed at strengthening public safety and national security, is in line with the Firearms Act and other prevailing laws, the Police Force said, and will include a thorough evaluation of the current firearms licensing procedures and regulations, with emphasis on enhancing their effectiveness, transparency and accountability.
In addition, it is to ensure a well-rounded and informed review, which will be done in collaboration with pertinent stakeholders, including legal experts, civil society organisations and industry specialists.
The Nigeria Police Force affirmed its unwavering commitment to diligently pursue and prosecute those engaged in these unlawful activities to the fullest extent of the law.
