A renowned Nigerian Obstetrician/Gynaecologist and the Managing Director of Nordica Fertility Centre in Lagos, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, has advised couples seeking fertility treatment to be extra careful before undergoing any procedure.
In an interview with Africa Health Report (AHR), Ajayi said this is because fertility treatment is a complex and sensitive process that requires a high level of professionalism and expertise.
He noted that there are many sub-standard fertility clinics and practitioners in Nigeria who do not have the necessary qualifications, equipment, or facilities to deliver quality fertility services.
“One of the problems we have in Nigeria is we don’t like reading but we must read. If you are not going to fall into the hands of charlatans, we must read. We must talk to doctors. But, most of the time, the way we talk to doctors in Nigeria is to say, ‘do you know who I am?’ That’s not the issue. The issue is that you must first of all educate yourself and then talk to the doctor and see whether this kind of doctor even knows what you know to be able to entrust yourself to such doctors,” Ajayi said.
Ajayi emphasised that fertility treatment is a serious matter that requires due diligence and caution. He urged couples to take the time to research and choose a reputable fertility clinic and practitioner to increase their chances of success.
“Conducting due diligence will give couples the assurance and confidence they need to pursue their dreams of parenthood,” Ajayi added.
