The Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, has called on the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to establish e-libraries and entrepreneurship training centres in higher education institutions across the state.
He made this request on Friday during a working visit to the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono in Abuja, where he also solicited for the establishment of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres in Taraba.
During the visit, Governor Kefas emphasised the importance of equipping students with entrepreneurship skills and exposing them to innovative ideas and technologies, noting that the entrepreneurship training centres would prepare students for the challenges of the 21st-century economy.
He further stressed the need for e-libraries, saying that they would promote a reading culture among the students and make educational resources more accessible and affordable.
Kefas said: “In my agenda, the priority is education, and if you look at our region educationally there is a major problem. We have huge human resources that are untapped and I have discovered that one of the huge reasons for insecurity is lack of education.
“For the higher institutions, I have also discovered that a lot of our children that their parents cannot afford to pay their school fees, and some of them are dropping out of school. We have some students in school but they are not in school, they don’t attend classes, and they are moving about taking all sorts of drugs, to reduce that I have to declare half of school fees in all our tertiary institutions.”
Responding to the governor’s request, the TETFund Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, expressed the Funds’ commitment to supporting higher education institutions in the state, noting that TETFund has a mandate to improve the quality of education in Nigeria.
Mr. Echono also commended Governor Kefas for his leadership and vision, saying that his commitment to education would help to transform the state and empower its citizens.
