A Nigerian health expert has warned that the continued use of undisclosed, toxic ingredients sex stimulants could lead to infertility in women, kidney failure, hypertension, heart diseases, among others.
Kayamata, as they are popularly called, are mostly locally made or mixed aphrodisiacs that enhance sexual appeal and libido. It has become increasingly popular among women seeking to spice up their love lives.
However, Dr. Henry Osazuwa, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Medimax Hospital, Abuja, has warned that Kayamata are made up of unconventional ingredients, many of which are undeclared on the packaging.
He noted that some of these ingredients were known to be highly toxic and could cause harm to the body when used regularly, saying: “These products, especially those containing P. yohimbe, can negatively affect the levels of the female hormones – FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone.
“The ability for regular ovulation can become compromised like to irregular periods and delays in conception, it is worrisome that many women are using them without fully understanding what they are exposing themselves to,” Dr. Osazuwa said.
Dr. Osazuwa, therefore, cautioned women against using these products and urged them to seek alternative means of enhancing their sexual appeal. He recommended healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet, to boost libido naturally.”
He further called on regulatory bodies to carry out stringent checks on the production and sale of Kayamata products to ensure that they do not contain toxic ingredients.
