The latest report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed that over 1.5 million new cases of COVID-19 have been reported globally from 10 July to August 6, 2023.
This indicates a significant rise in new COVID-19 cases and deaths in the last 28 days.
The report, released on Friday, also highlighted that over 2500 new COVID-19-related deaths occured during the period and while five WHO regions reported a decrease in the number of cases and death, the western Pacific region observed the highest number of cases and deaths in the last 28 days.
“As of 6 August 2023, over 769 million confirmed cases and over 6.9 million deaths have been reported globally,” it stated, adding that “currently, reported cases do not accurately represent infection rates due to the reduction in testing and reporting globally.
“During these 28 days, 44 per cent (103 of 234) of countries reported at least one case to WHO – a proportion that has been declining since mid-2022.”
In addition, the WHO’s weekly COVID-19 epidemiological update at the global and regional levels also looked at new hospitalisations and ICU admissions rates and updates on the SARS-CoV-2 variants of interest (VOI) and variants under monitoring (VUM).
