International Youth Day: Speaker Abbas Harps on Skills Acquisition

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has commended Nigerian youths on their resilience, talent, passion for the country, while urging them to invest in skills acquisition.

He made this statement on Saturday, in commemoration of International Youth Day celebrated August 12 globally since its inception by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009.

Hon. Abbas, in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, added that in accordance with this year’s theme; ‘Green Skills for Youths: Towards a Sustainable World’, skills acquisition will enable youths to contribute their quota towards the development of the country and a sustainable world.

The Speaker noted that the inclusion of young Nigerian in private and public sectors is critical to the development of the country due to their numbers and proven excellence in various fields in and out of the country.

He asserted that the House of Representatives under his leadership will prioritise youths and address issues affecting them by creating and developing skills and talents as the young populace is capable of making the nation great.

“With a huge youth population, Nigeria has the potential of becoming a greater nation… Nigerian youths have been breaking records and attracting positive attention to the country,” the statement read.

While applauding President Bola Tinubu for recognising young talents by nominating them to be a part of his government, he stressed the need to address the brain drain associated with mass youth emigration by creating platforms and enabling a friendly business and career environment for the youths.
