Insecurity: Trademore Residents Express Worry Over Police Unit Washed Away By Flood

Trademore residents are growing increasingly concerned about their safety as the flooding in the area has resulted in the evacuation of the police unit stationed within the estate.

With rising criminal activities and limited law enforcement presence, residents fear that the absence of law enforcement will exacerbate the existing insecurity issues in the neighbourhood.

The recent heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding have severely affected estate which is located in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), causing extensive damage to infrastructure and forcing many residents to evacuate their homes. Among the affected facilities was the police unit, which has been temporarily closed due to the suffering of significant damage, Africa Health Report (AHR) has gathered.

Mr. Ameachi Smith, a resident of Trademore Estate, expressed worries about the consequences of the evacuation, saying, “We already had concerns about security in our neighbourhood, and the absence of a police unit here will only make things worse. Criminal elements may take advantage of this situation, causing further harm and posing a threat to our safety.”

Another resident, Ms. Queen Esther, who is also a victim of the flooding, expressed similar concerns.

“We have always felt safe with the police unit here in Trademore Estate,” she said. “But now that they are gone, we are worried that criminals might take advantage of the situation and target our community.”

Mrs. Amanda Johnson, another concerned resident and the owner of the bouquet in the estate, emphasised the urgent need for the authorities to find a solution, stating, “Our peace of mind is at stake. We need the police unit to be restored immediately or temporarily reassigned to a nearby facility until the damages caused by the flooding are repaired. We cannot feel safe knowing there is no dedicated police presence in our estate.”

Responding to residents’ concerns, a reliable source who plead his name not to be mentioned, acknowledged the heightened insecurity in the absence of law enforcement.

He said, “We understand the fears of our residents and share their concerns. Our management team has been in constant communication with the local police authorities to address this issue as quickly as possible.

“As you can see, we have increased the number of private security guards while waiting for the police unit to be reinstated. These guards cannot be as skilled as professional security guards, but for the time being, that is where we are.”

In the meantime, the management of Trademore Estate is urging residents to remain vigilant, look out for one another, and report any suspicious activities to the designated security unit.
