Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has given approval for the implementation of the new retirement age and length of service for all categories of teachers within the state.

This decision, which was made public on Friday in a statement by the state’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, means that the retirement age for teachers has been increased to 65 years, while the length of service has been pegged at 40 years.

Kula further said a circular to that effect was signed by the State’s Head of Service, Dr Ogbogbo Ode, adding that its implementation will be backdated to May 2023.

The Governor explained that this was in furtherance to the enactment of the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers by the Benue State House of Assembly, which was signed into law by the outgone administration.

“With the new development, there will no longer be boundaries in the implementation of the harmonised retirement age/length of service for Education officers/Teachers.

“However, those who are not interested in elongation schemes are free to apply for retirement from the service, in line with extant Public Service Rules.

“Furthermore, the Education Officers, Teachers and the general public are to note that the Harmonised Retirement Age Law, 2023, is superior to any guideline on the subject,” the statement added.
