Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the wife of the Lagos state governor, has spoken on the death of Vwaere Diaso, the medical doctor, saying “an arrow has been fired into the health family”.
On Tuesday, Diaso died after an elevator at the General Hospital, Lagos Island, which she was in, fell from the 10th floor.
The doctor’s demise has continued to attract a chorus of condemnation on social media platforms, with many Nigerians accusing the hospital’s management of negligence.
The elevator was said to have had faults which staff had frequently complained about to no avail.
“A doctor who had just 2 weeks to complete her housemanship just died in general hospital (Odan, Lagos island) due to poor management and negligence. The elevator she was in, fell from 10th floor to the ground! Video was so painful to watch,” a Twitter user wrote.

But on Wednesday, the governor’s wife, while addressing the media, implied that the incident was caused by a “spiritual attack” against the health sector.
In a now-viral video, Ibijoke also linked the incident to the jet accident that occurred in the state on Tuesday while seeking answers from the crowd.
“An arrow has been fired into the health family. First of August is a day I will never forget,” she said.
“The same day a helicopter crashed, the same day a lift dropped down. How? How? How?”

In 2020, the medical guild had drawn the attention of the state government to the non-functional elevator.
“The doctors quarters at General hospital Lagos has 10 floors. It has a non-functional elevator and no running water. Are we going to wait till someone dies before things are done properly?” the guild wrote on Twitter.

Below are some reactions on Twitter.
That elevator crash in HSC was completely avoidable! She didn’t need to die for it to be attended to. Other doctors had complained numerous times about the same elevator.
I hate how the “anyhowness” in Nigeria keeps snatching lives and dreams.
It’s frustrating! Damn!

Particularly aggrieved because we’ve complained for a long time about this elevator. We’ve maneuvered, managed and prayed each time we had to use it. Empty promises will be made to fix it….till it killed one of us💔💔💔💔💔💔😭 https://t.co/nFo3LrioFY pic.twitter.com/xHjSKnXdjN

I completed my internship in General Hospital Odan Lagos and I’m aware of their ZERO maintenance attitude. Elevators show tons and signs of problems before collapsing.
Now a Doctor is gone! A whole life gone because of wickedness and corruption. Someone’s head(s) must roll.

I can’t count how many times we didn’t have water or light in that useless HSC. We were even robbed different times. We complained about the elevator but all they did was patch it and say that we should be grateful we even have quarters to stay.
No. Someone has to pay for this. https://t.co/PZSBgXNoTS

Guy, I was stuck in that elevator. Not once, not twice. I complained, we complained. I said we should strike because we won’t have water for weeks and be expected to show. Mgt said was instigating violence and should go and become a politician. Now our friend is dead. https://t.co/78QGGAj8Wn
