Infertility: Expert warns against prolonged exercise

By Gom Mirian

A Reproductive Endocrinologist and the Chief Executive Officer of Lifelink Fertility Clinics, Dr Kemi Ailoje, has cautioned the public against extreme exercise, particularly when it is paired with unusually low body fat percentages, strenuous training or weight reduction.

Speaking to Africa Health Report (AHR) on Saturday, Ailoje warned that the act might upset the body’s hormonal balance, causing irregular menstruation or even amenorrhea (absence of period).

She said: “These may have an impact on fertility. Maintaining a good balance in your exercise regimen and making sure you are getting enough nutrition to meet your body’s needs are vital.

“To increase fertility, women should refrain from engaging in daily activities such as smoking, excessive alcohol use, poor nutrition, untreated medical conditions, stress and inadequate sleep.”
