Fuel Subsidy Removal: NLC Threatens Nationwide Strike on June 7

By Gom Mirian

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said it will begin a nationwide strike on Wednesday, June 7.

The union announced this on Friday at an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) in Abuja.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said the proposed action was in reaction to the hike in the pump price of petrol following President Tinubu’s pronouncement on subsidy removal at his inauguration ceremony on May 29.

He declared that the government, particularly the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), has up till next Wednesday to revert to the old price of fuel or face an indefinite protest across the country.

Briefing journalists, he said, “The NLC NEC directs all state councils and industrial unions to commence mobilisation from this moment.”

He added that though “Tinubu’s decision received backing from the NNPC and the House of Representatives, it had since been resisted by the NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).”
