No fewer than 24 million people are living with diagnosed Schizophrenia globally, yet, one of the most stigmatised mental health illnesses, according to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).
The Agency which disclosed this on its official website on Wednesday to commemorate the 2023 World Schizophrenia Day, said Schizophrenia which is a mental disorder that affects a person’s ability to think, feel, and behave is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain resulting from environmental such as drugs intake, smoking, and excessive alcohol.
It stated that: “It is advisable to avoid drugs such as cannabis, cocaine and also avoid social isolation and have enough rest and sleep.
“They are people with jobs, people with families and friends, and most of all, people who make a positive contribution to society. People with schizophrenia are people like you.
“Just by being understanding and helpful to people suffering from schizophrenia, we can make a big difference,” said NPHCD.
