Lassa Fever Death Toll Hits 156 in 17 Weeks

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has disclosed that a total of 156 Lassa fever deaths, and 918 confirmed cases have been recorded in 28 states in Nigeria.

 

The agency made the disclosure Tuesday in a recent epidemiological report published on the website of the NCDC for week 17 of 2023, spanning 24 to 30, April.

 

According to the report, the number of newly confirmed cases increased from 20 in Epi week 16, 2023 to 21 cases recorded from Ondo, Edo, Taraba, Plateau, Zamfara, and Sokoto states.

 

The NCDC said the record shows a case fatality rate (CFR) of 17.0 percent which is lower than the 19.16 percent CFR recorded for the same period in 2022.

 

“In total for 2023, 28 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 106 Local Government Areas.”

 

Further breakdown of the report shows that 176 suspected cases were recorded within the period under review, of which twenty-one cases and two deaths were confirmed.
