Nyamata (Bugesera): Faced with young people who indulge in unprotected sex under the pretext that condoms are expensive or not available, this is an attitude synonymous with a loss of common sense and which does not attach importance to life, according to Joseph Sebineza Rwakama, of the Awareness Program within the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC).
“Some rural youth in Bugesera district say condoms are not always available. You have to rent a motorbike for one thousand Frw (1000 Frw) to come and buy it in the center of Nyamata, ie expenses that amount to 1500 Frw. The young mason cannot accept squandering such a sum. He prefers to rush into unprotected sex,” testifies the young bicycle salesman, Ukwishaka Abdoul, a newlywed who expects to validate his civil union in the sector in a few days.
Rwakana strongly disapproves of young people who do not take care of their lives and who throw themselves into unprotected sex, whatever the motive.
“These young people need to know the value of life and make a decision to always use safer sex. They can get the condom from the health counsellor, the shop, the health post or center or even the hospital. The important thing is to save your life at all costs,” he recommends.

Faced with another idea that is widespread among some and says that AIDS is the disease of the rich, Rwakana replies that such a perception or such a discourse should not exist. Especially as there are reports of rising new infections among young people of all socio-economic conditions.
“Such a perception must change, because AIDS infects people from all walks of life and at all levels,” he continues.
Regarding the behaviors developed when one is tested positive for AIDS, Joseph Rwakana shows that the important thing is to know how to accept oneself as such and submit to an ARV regimen that allows one to live a long life and take care of one’s family.
“When you refuse to accept your HIV status, you indulge in alcohol and drugs. We lose our minds. One adopts attitudes of discouragement and despair. We kill ourselves in a way. The main thing is to listen to the doctor’s advice. ARVs prolong life. We continue to work. Opportunistic diseases are avoided. The virus is eliminated from his blood. We manage to have an almost normal life, ”he reveals.
About the women’s condom, Rwakana informs that this condom is available to protect. Only the men’s condom is more common. Women know their condom. They don’t think of looking for this condom in hospitals and health centers and using it. It is necessary to promote it so that people use it more.
The other important point is that parents, father and mother, should dare to talk about family planning (FP), and sexual and reproductive health to their children. The time has come to break taboos. The need to fight against AIDS requires us to be daring and to approach the physiological transformations of the body in front of children, in order to better prepare them to protect their lives and build their future.
Rwakana made these remarks on the sidelines of the show, the theater and RBC’s messages to the public of the Nyamata market. The presence of RBC made it possible to enhance the knowledge of young people in the fight against AIDS, with regard to questions and answers with the public.
It appeared that not all young people know that when they have been victims of rape or have had unprotected sex, they must go urgently to the nearest Health Center within 72 hours to receive appropriate treatment.
Irakoze Berthe, 20 years old, seamstress, finished her 6th primary, and Ukwishaka Abdoul, 23 years old, young, married are to be placed in this category. Their words show that they had imprecise knowledge of what to do when you have had unprotected sex.
RBC’s presence in Nyamataa has been beneficial for them and their environment, especially as they will share information with others. These young people testify that Nyamata is familiar with prostitution and that sexual relations are not always protected. This is why greater awareness is needed to raise the level of knowledge and commitment to protect oneself. (END)
