Young Gikundiro and Sibomana
Sake(ngoma): Jean Marie Vianney Gikundiro is a 27-year-old single man who carries out transport by bicycle to the Sake market, Gafunzo cell in the Ngoma district in the Eastern Province. He believes that the provocative clothing outfits of beautiful attractive girls force many boys to engage in unprotected sex without a condom. “So much the desire for sex is irresistible and we rush into sexual intercourse without thinking and without protection,” he admits.
Gikundiro says he delayed getting married due to lack of money to support his household. He thinks that a hundred Frw condom is a high price. This forces some young people to have unprotected sex. The opinion is shared by other young people met at the Sake market.

“But hard life and poverty are behind young girls who sell their bodies to survive Sake. These are known cases. The price for a pass is 500 Frw. A cup of tea and two donuts are enough to get a young girl to agree to sleep with a boy. And some boys prefer to practice unprotected sex, instead of spending three hundred Frw which is hard to earn”, continues Gikundiro.
Félicien Sibomana, 23, donut seller was circumcised in 2021 and he has not yet known a woman. He is often shown women who are infected and on ARVs. This causes him to be terrified of the desire to indulge in sex.
“The 25-year prison sentence imposed on boys who impregnate young girls, together with the fear of catching AIDS, forces me to avoid sex. And then I feel a great shame to break into a shop to pay for the condom. Condoms are available but they are expensive here. It is regrettable that many young people practice unprotected sex”, informs Sibomana.
Asked about the knowledge of young people to avoid HIV/AIDS, Sibomana replied that the Youth Center provides education in family planning (FP) and in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
But Sibomana shows limits in the event of exposure to HIV/AIDS or rape and the urgency of going to the Health Center within 72 hours to benefit from treatment.
The same shortcomings are visible in the young Claudine Niyonsenga, 20 years old, seller of used clothes at the Saké market since she finished her 6th year of primary school. He needs sufficient and precise information on this case. She admits that many young girls her age need to improve their knowledge in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Fortunately, RBC is on hand to raise awareness among these young people who are rushing to ask for condoms.

“Mwisenya Turahari = Do not destroy. We protect the community”-Jean-Nepo Ngandabanga
This is the original program launched in Ngoma district for the purpose of solving community problems.
“We want to privilege the values of Rwandan culture and identity based on human worth and dignity. We value a good education of our youth”, indicates the executive secretary of the Gafunzo cell which houses the Sake market, Jean-Nepo Ngendabanga.
He informs that football competitions are organized between the villages (imidugudu) of the cell, and that on this occasion training is organized for young people on the values that build an organized and solid city. On this occasion, we also talk about the fight against HIV/AIDS, prostitution and unemployment. He adds that his cell recorded this year nine cases of early pregnancies among minor girls under 18 years old.
“We urge good behavior among young people. Being a single mother under the age of 18 does not allow you to build a good future. Prostitution often results from unresolved conflicts in households whose children descend into despair and the life of the streets and bars. We go to schools in Sake, in particular Groupe Scolaire and Twelve, to raise awareness about the Rwandan values to be safeguarded”, continues Jean-Nepo.
The executive secretary of Sake, Jean de Dieu Ndaruhutse, agrees and explains that a committee of three honest men and three women were elected at the level of each village to iron out family conflicts and other disagreements. Few unresolved cases are forwarded to the village chief.
The Executive Secretary of Saké Ndaruhutse
Ndaruhutse reports that the Sake sector has 568 people on ARVs and well monitored by the Health Center. Already 599 men have been circumcised, and 16 cases of early pregnancy have been noted since June 2022 to date.
“People want to practice safer sex to deal with HIV/AIDS. They attend awareness sessions. Especially since HIV/AIDS is killing people before their eyes. Prostitution unfortunately exists in this Center which is growing and which is subject to inevitable external influences. But we urge young people to work to avoid unemployment. Youth cooperatives are already making soap. We have a tourist-oriented sector that builds hotels. Many activities recruit young people in the construction of the Sake market, the construction of the macadamized road towards Nyanza, the construction of the Health Center and health posts. Young people have occupations to avoid prostitution and unemployment. We also have anti-AIDS clubs. Young people participate in general assemblies of populations and learn to eradicate prostitution. Every Thursday the anti-AIDS clubs meet and train in the protection of life”, he specifies.
The “Wikwisenya: Do Not Destroy Yourself” program trains people to build community and resolve conflicts based on the values that build community. Parents also do their best to educate children. We have everything it takes to have a healthy, secure and stable community”, underlines the executive secretary of Sake. (END)
