The Nigerian government through the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCDA) has made public its plans to get rid of commercial motorcyclists popularly known as ‘Okada’ in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Directorate of Road Traffic Services Director, Abdulateef  Bello said this in Abuja when he led a team to crush the over 250 motorcycles seized for various traffic offenses on Thursday.

To this end, Mr. Bello further advised potential investors having plans to invest in commercial motorcycles to rethink.

He said: “The exercise today covers Lugbe, part of Apo and Galadimawa, as of last week we were in Lugbe and Durumi and we will continue until we achieve our aim of not having any commercial motorcycles,” he said.

Mr. Bello noted that the administration is not witch-hunting commercial motorcyclists but that the destruction was because they violated their operation areas.

“Their infractions are quite high; they are facilitating criminal activities and riding against traffic,” Bello said.

Also, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Monitoring, Inspection, and Enforcement Ikharo Attah, said the Minister was working hard to leave a clean and beautiful city legacy.

“For now people can see clearly that those in Galadimawa have seen; what those in Area 1 have seen; what those in Durumi have seen and some parts of AYA have seen and those in Kubwa will soon be getting their own. That is why we are crushing them in their presence. It is very clear that the Minister of FCT Malam Muhammad Bello will work till the last day in the office,” Attah said.
