Bugesera: In order to continue coping with the Covid-19 epidemic, health personnel continue to administer Covid-19 vaccines to residents who have not yet benefited from them. One of the current programs is to give these vaccines to children in nursery schools at the level of nutritional centers for children or ECDs (Early Childhood Development). Parents report that they are happy with it, because they have benefited a lot from it.
One of the places where this initiative to protect children from ECDs has just been launched is the district of Bugesera, particularly in the village of Kagumasi in the Gashora Sector. In this village, 76 children were identified in 9 ECDs and we started to vaccinate them on March 29, 2023. In 3 ECDs, 21 children were vaccinated.
When a group of journalists from the Association of Journalists who fight against HIV/AIDS (ABASIRWA) visited the vaccination site on March 30, 2023, they found that children were in the process of benefiting from the vaccines.
The holder of the Gashora Health Center, Landouald Habimana, who is also responsible for preventive action at the sector level, explained how the program is carried out.
“Adults and primary school children have been protected. Now we go down to protect children from 5 to 11 years old. We want Rwandans of all ages to be vaccinated and fully protected,” he said.
He added that this vaccination program for children in the villages will continue in order to bring health services to the people, since before the children are vaccinated, the health personnel must first talk to their parents.
Parents feel relieved
These immunization services were generally initiated at the Gashora Health Center. Many parents travel long distances to get vaccinated or to have their children vaccinated.
Mrs. Marie Nyiranzabandora, representative of the church, is one of the educators of the children of the village of Kagumasi. When a group of journalists from the various media that form the ABASIRWA umbrella, visited the area, Nyiranzabandora had taken 3 five-year-old children and 4 six-year-old children to the site for vaccinations.
“Now we are happy to have a health workforce that brings health services closer to the people. Before, we had to travel long distances to reach the Health Center. The observation is that for the moment, this program which brings vaccines closer to beneficiaries will protect children and vulnerable people in their communities, we are really relieved. It shows that our government cares about us,” she said.
This mother devoted to the education of children continues to explain her duty to open the minds of parents by talking to them about the merits of being vaccinated and of having her children vaccinated in order to protect themselves against the epidemic of the Covid-19.
She returned to the misperception that spread false information among the public, arguing that vaccinated people could spread other diseases such as diarrhoea. But now the truth is known to all.
In Gashora Sector, 942 children registered in 36 ECDs will be vaccinated.
In the district of Bugesera, the vaccination coverage of children in ECDs reached 43%, or 30,442 children out of a total of 71,570 children who should be vaccinated. (END)
