Nyamata: The Nyamata Field Mobile Hospital or Field Mobile Hospital with 92 beds is ready at all times to deal with epidemics including Marburg recently detected in Tanzania, according to the Medical Director General of Nyamata Hospital, Dr. William Rutagengwa.
This field hospital was built during the time of Covid-19. The last patients he sheltered were the last ten Covid-19 patients. Since March 2022, we have not yet received patients with Covid-19. The hospital is built from thirty containers. It has all the basic services: emergency, operating room, surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, laboratory, radiology, dialysis, nutrition, physiotherapist, etc. The group of doctors working in these different departments must be protected. We are always on alert. From Kirehe to Bugesera, we are monitoring the Nemba border to see if there is any Marburg case. This epidemic is like Ebola. It is caught by contact with the sweat or saliva of an infected person or when you touch a dead and infected animal,” he said.
Hospital equipment
He made these remarks in front of about fifty journalists supervised by ABASIRWA (Association of journalists who fight against HIV / AIDS and other diseases) and the Bio-Medical Center of Rwanda (RBC) and who follow a training and reporting workshop. for five days in Bugesera district.
Dr. Rutagengwa recalled that the Mobile Field Hospital of Nyamata has the capacity to receive thirty patients and that it can receive in specific periods, other patients from various hospitals waiting to benefit from surgical operations. After 4 to 5 days, these patients can go home. The mobile hospital has a production of breathing air, electricity and generators, washing machines, three incinerators and a morgue. It also has trained technical staff working at the Military Hospital of Kanombe, CHUK and Nyamata, who can be mobilized in the event of an epidemic.
“The Marburg epidemic is dangerous since it kills 90% of the number of infected people. We avoid it as we do to fight against Ebola. The message I am sending is to continue to implement strategies to avoid Covid-19: wash your hands, practice distancing, do not shake hands to greet each other, etc. We must remain vigilant to avoid various epidemics, even the Covid-19 has not completely disappeared, as a few cases are recorded,” he said.
