The human rights lawyer challenged the award on his verified tweetter handle @Malcolminfiniti on Sunday.
The challenge which is coming barely five days after the president’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in a statement said that Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the ECOWAS chairman’s decision at a bilateral meeting with Buhari on the sidelines of the ongoing 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Qatar
According to Shehu, ECOWAS had made the decision to honour President Muhammadu Buhari with an award in recognition of his achievements in the defence and promotion of democracy in the subregion.
Reacting to this statement, Omirhobo qurrried the award by demanding the criteria for which the Economic Community of West African States used in taking such decisions.
He said; “For ECOWAS to confer ‘Democracy Icon Award’ on President Buhari. On what basis? Is it on security, economy, obeying rule of law, conduct of election, research and development or the dividends of democracy?
“Buhari failed woefully in all the above mentioned areas”, he added.
